海师堂里的三尊塑像就是修建乐山大佛的功臣。首先我们看中间这一位，大佛的始建者——海通禅师，他是贵州人氏，当年在凌云山上结茅为僧。

古代的乐山三江汇流之处，水势相当的凶猛，经常发生船毁人亡的事件。海通和尚大发慈悲之心，准备修建大佛来镇水患。于是四处化缘，筹得不少的钱财。当时有一位贪官见财眼开，准备敲诈勒索他，海通法师义正严辞地说“自目可剜，佛财难得”。

意思是说，我自己的眼睛都可以挖下来给你，但你休想得到这笔佛财。那个贪官居然蛮横无礼地要他试一试，海通禅师大义凛然地一手捧盘，一手挖出了自己的双眼。贪官吓坏了，从此以后没再为难他。海通禅师造佛时年事已高，所以当大佛修到肩部的时候，他就圆寂了，大佛的修造工程也因此停了下来。大约过了十年的时间，剑南西川节度使章仇兼琼捐赠俸金20万，继续修造乐山大佛，由于工程浩大，需要巨大的经费，于是朝廷下令赐麻盐税款，使工程进展迅速。当乐山大佛修到膝盖的时候，续建者章仇兼琼迁任户部尚书，到京赴任，工程再次停工。
